Kate Bajic

Kate Bajic creates handcrafted artisan jewellery as limited edition or one-off pieces, inspired by the botanical forms and structures of lichen, and translated into contemporary wearable pieces of art. Kate works mainly in sterling silver but also introduces colour into her work through the use of patinated steel, oxidising and acrylic paints.

When creating a new piece of jewellery, Kate begins by looking through design sheets of lichen forms and patterns that she's built up over the years from photographs and drawings of lichens in situ. Tracing these elements onto paper working them into different compositions; once happy with the overall form the individual sections are transferred as templates onto silver sheet ready for piercing.

Depending on the piece and Kate's final vision for it, Kate relishes experimenting with materials, forms and colours. Her jewellery is intuitive and sculptural in nature, with most pieces being either one-off or limited edition. Because of this they are designed to sit together and complement each other whilst still being unique and individual.
